The Snowdrift Crabapple is a deciduous, self-pollinating tree admired for its abundant flowers and lush canopy.
This cultivar begins bearing fruit from its gracefully drooping branches about three to five years after planting. With proper care, it can thrive for up to 50 years.
Initially emerging as pink-red buds, the crabapple blossoms transform in mid-spring into delicate, snow-white flowers with yellow anthers at their center. The dense clusters of blooms create a striking snowdrift effect, giving the tree its name.
Each blossom measures approximately 1¾ inches in diameter and exudes a sweet fragrance that entices passersby. Though they resemble winter’s touch, their scent is pure springtime delight.
As autumn arrives, the flowers give way to an abundance of round, fleshy, and tart orange-red crabapples. Ranging from ⅜ to ½ inch in diameter, these fruits provide an essential food source for wildlife, persisting through winter.
Unlike other crabapple varieties, the Snowdrift's fruit remains on the tree after maturing in fall, rather than dropping to the ground.
With its dense branching and upright, broad-rounded vase shape, the Snowdrift Crabapple stands strong against the wind. Reaching 15 to 20 feet in both height and width, it grows at a steady pace of 1 to 2 feet per year.
