The winged euonymus, commonly known as burning bush, is a deciduous shrub admired for its vivid red autumn foliage and vigorous growth.
Typically reaching up to 20 feet tall, burning bush features opposite, elliptical leaves measuring 1 to 2 inches long. In fall, its foliage transforms into a brilliant red, making it a favorite ornamental choice. Its stems are green with distinct corky wings, giving the plant its unique name.
In late spring, the shrub produces small, greenish-yellow flowers that are subtle rather than showy. By fall, it develops clusters of bright red capsules that split open to reveal orange seeds, which birds help disperse.
Burning bush flourishes in full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil. Once established, it demonstrates excellent drought tolerance and adapts to various soil types, though it prefers slightly acidic conditions.
